Sir John F.W. HERSCHEL (1792-1871), Alfred ROSLING, J.B. DANCER, George SHADBOLT, Herbert WATKINS
CONSTRAINT : maximise ratio x/y (where x = angle of vision of original scene, and y = surface area of negative).
INVENTION : photomicrography (1853).
WORKS : Sir David BREWSTER (1857) imagined a text printed on a negative containing a second text inside a full stop. Queen Victoria's signet ring (c/o Dancer) contained a photomicrograph of her family (3mm across). The portraits of Prince Albert in earrings, tie-pins and bracelets which she had made, as those of generals that appeared on army buttons, are, however, merely enamel miniatures.
